When you come back from a 4 run deficit, that's something to talk about. When you do it twice in one game, well, that's practically unheard of. But, when the game also features a historic 6 for 6 performance by Johnny Damon whose last hit of the game also capped one final dramatic comeback in the 9th -that's one for the ages...
That's exactly the type of game the Yankees played Saturday on a sweltering day in the Bronx as they defeated the Kansas City Royals 12-11...
The 9th inning began with the score tied 10-10 and Mariano Rivera on the mound for the Yankees. Then, uncharacteristically, Mo surrendered a home run to the first batter he faced-the first home run he gave up all year and it couldn't have come at a worst time...But Mo shook it off and retired the next three batters in order...
In the bottom of the 9th the Yankees picked Mo up...after 1 out, Jorge Posada homered to right...then after Robinson Cano grounded out, Wilson Betemit walked and Melky Cabrera reached on an infield hit...
That set the stage for Johnny Damon to make history...Already 5 for 5 on the afternoon, another hit would tie an American League record for most hits by a single player in a 9 inning game-and more importantly-win the game for the Yankees!
Johnny Damon delivered! He singled to right field, earned at least one asterisk next to his name, and won the game for the Yanks!
Additional Notes:
In addition to Jorge Posada, Jason Giambi and Alex Rodriguez also had home runs...
The run Mo gave up in the 9th was only the 2nd run he gave up all season...
Pettitte struggled mightily...his next start needs to be a good one...
Today, Joba pitches in his second start of the year...
Good luck Joba!
GO YANKS!!!!
