On a night when A-Rod hit his 521st home run and tied a baseball icon like Ted Williams for 15th on the all-time career hr list, it's ironic that a home run by someone with less than 50 would be the bigger blow...but that's exactly what Robinson Cano's 8th inning pinch-hit blast provided-the hackneyed "blast" apropos here for a change, as the ball landed in the last row of the right field stands...
That 8th inning Cano home run spelled the difference between uplifting victory and crushing defeat...crushing it would have been too, because the Yankees saw a 5 run lead in the 7th evaporate quicker than a Joba fastball...
But tonight, the Yankees weren't going to lose...couldn't lose...Joe G. made all the right moves this time-lifting Gonzalez for Cano, using Mo for 4 outs, and in the process, securing the win!
Other notes:
Ian Kennedy, till he got hit with that line drive in the 7th, turned in a respectable-if not remarkable-performance, holding the Rays to 3 runs over 6 innings...
-and Farnsworth didn't give up any runs for a change!
On to more serious matters...All the best to Joba's dad...let's hope he recovers and gets well soon!
Go Yanks!
