Lately, the Yankees haven't been winning games like these-extra inning games on the road that is. In fact, prior to last night's game in Minnesota, they had lost their last 7 extra inning games on the road. But all that changed Saturday night, when they beat the Minnesota Twins 7-6 in 12 innings.
On a night when Wang didn't feature his best stuff, fortunately the bullpen did and gave the Yankee bats a chance to eventually come through...
After Edwar Ramirez gave up his first run of the year yielding a home run to Michael Cuddyer in the 7th to tie the game at 6-6, Veras, Farnsworth Ohlendorf and Mariano Rivera didn't allow a run the rest of the way...
In the eventful 12th, the Yankee offense finally woke up again after lying dormant for the previous 5 innings. The frame opened up inauspiciously enough with a ground out by Melky Cabrera. But then, Johnny Damon and Derek Jeter hit back to back singles. Jeter's single sent Damon hustling to 3rd. With runners on 1st and 3rd and one out, Bobby Abreu came through with a clutch base hit that scored Johnny Damon and gave the Yankees a 7-6 lead that would hold up and become the final score...
Additional Notes:
Wang didn't have his best stuff tonight, and that now makes it 5 games in a row where he has not picked up a victory...
Most impressive in the bullpen's effort last night, was the 2 inning performance of Ross Ohlendorf...although he got himself in trouble-especially in the 11th, the important thing is he worked his way out of it...in his 2 innings of relief, he didn't allow a run...
Mariano Rivera picked up yet another save...he's now 15 for 15 in save opportunities!
Johnny Damon and Bobby Abreu each had a multi hit night...Alex Rodriguez and Bobby Abreu had 2 RBIs apiece...
Tomorrow Rasner will try for another quality start...
Let's Go Yanks!!!!
