For a while there on Thursday afternoon at Yankee Stadium-especially when the Yankees were down 7- 2 and falling apart every way imaginable-it seemed that the only thunder you were likely to hear would come from the overcast sky above or from Joe Girardi's office after the game...
Instead, and luckily for the Yankees, the thunder came off the bat of Jason Giambi when he hit a 2-out, 2-strike 2-run, walk-off home run that lifted the Yankees to an improbable 9-8 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays...
How improbable was this 9th inning comeback? Consider this: The Yankees had to do it against B.J. Ryan a tough lefty and one of the premier closers in the game-and then there was the manner in which it unfolded...
With 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, Alex Rodriguez singled and took 2nd base on "defensive indifference." Hideki Matsui followed with a single bringing A-Rod home and making the score 8-7. Then B.J. Ryan got 2 strikes on Giambi, but when he tried for that 3rd strike, well...
The rest as they say, is history...
The ball Giambi hit ended up some 10 to 15 rows in the upper deck, and the Yankees walked away with a 9-8 victory, easily the most uplifting win of the season so far...
Additional Notes:
Wang's struggles continued...he hasn't won a decision in over a month...
Kyle Farnsworth proved once again that he's unreliable in relief...he gave up 3 hits and 1 run in the 9th, yet ironically enough he got the win...
Wilson Betemit had a key 2-run hr earlier in the game...
Tomorrow Raser goes against KC...
