Looks like a day off does an offense good. Even the slumping Giambi got in on the act. The big blow came in the 7th inning off the bat of Bobby Abreu, when he hit a grand slam and put the Yankees in the lead for good. Jason Giambi had homered early, and Johnny Damon added a 3-run shot in the 8th, to put the game out of reach. Final score: Yankees 9, White Sox 5.
On the pitching end, Wang just didn't have ace kind of stuff last night, but still managed to weather the storm, allowing 3 runs in 6 innings of work...And Joba proved yet again how valuable he is in relief. After Treber and Bruney managed to load the bases in the bottom of the 7th the Yankees's 6-3 lead looked tenuous to say the least, until Joe G. brought in Joba and brought on a collective sigh of relief from millions of Yankee fans. Though a run did come home, it was inconsequential-bottom line he got out of a tough jam as very few can do.
For those of you who still want him to start this year I ask you this: How many games like last night's, are you willing to lose? Is there anyone in the Yankee bullpen that could come into a bases loaded situation like that and emerge practically unscathed?
The only one I can think of is Joba, right now, and until anyone in that bullpen convinces me otherwise he's the one I'd go to...My guess is that he'll be reliable in that role all year-and that's not something you can easily replace...
Yes, pitching him in the 7th and 8th is looking more idiotic every day!
Moose goes tomorrow night-He needs to step up, no question about it. Go Moose! Go Yanks!
