The New York Yankees Are World Champions!

The best way to sum up Game 6 of the World Series is with Yankee broadcaster John Sterling's famous phrase:

"A Thrilla By Godzilla!"

Sterling utters that phrase every time Hideki "Godzilla" Matsui launches a home run, but last night you could apply it to the whole game, because it was Matsui's 3 for 4, 6 rbi performance--including a home run--that secured victory in the final game of the 2009 World Series...

Godzilla reduced Philadelphia to rubble, as he single-handedly carried New York across the postseason finish line. The performance earned World Series MVP honors for Matsui and the Yankees their 27th World Championship...

Additional Notes

Although Hideki's heroics were the predominant theme last night, there were other keys to victory as well, including Andy Pettitte gutsy performance pitching 5 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs and Mariano Rivera relief effort, recording the last 5 outs...

The MVP could have gone to Mo just as easily in my opinion, but that's not to take anything away from Matsui who was a worthy candidate, regardless...

Besides Hideki Matsui, one other Yankee had 3 hits last night--Derek Jeter, of course...he finished the series with a .407 batting average. Incidentally, Matsui hit for a higher average, albeit with fewer at-bats. He hit ridiculous .615!

The next stop for the Pinstripes? A parade down The Canyon of Heroes tomorrow! And after that, #28!!!!! Meanwhile...

Congratulations on #27!!!!!!!!!!

Phillies Win, Sending Series Back To The Bronx...

The story of Game 5 of the World Series can be summed up in two sentences: A.J. Burnett and Phil Coke didn't have it. Cliff Lee and Chase Utley did.

Lee turned in another solid performance and Utley belted 2 home runs...Burnett meanwhile, couldn't make it through the 3rd inning, and reliever Phil Coke allowed 2 home runs...the result was a Philly win and a trip back to the Bronx...

The Yankees did show a lot of fight, however. They rallied for 4 runs in their last two at bats, turning what was an 8-2 Philly laugher into an 8-6 contest, but in the end it was the City of Brotherly Love that prevailed in this one, not the Pinstripes...

The Yanks still lead the series 3-2 and with Andy Pettitte on the hill Wednesday night--even if he is going on short rest--you've gotta like their chances...

Additional Notes:

A.J. Burnett allowed 6 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks in 2 innings of work...Dave Robertson and Alfredo Aceves each pitched 2 scoreless innings in relief...Phil Coke allowed 2 runs in just 2/3 of an inning...Phil Hughes pitched 1 1/3 of an inning and did not allow a run...

Johnny Damon had 3 hits...Alex Rodriguez had 2 hits and 3 rbi...

Tomorrow, Andy Pettittte will be on the hill for the Yanks in Game 6 of the World Series.

Yanks Win Again, Lead Series 3-1!

After Joba Chamberlain gave up an 8th inning game-tying home run to Pedro Feliz, it looked like the Yanks would face a rough road ahead. First they'd have to deal with Philly closer Brad Lidge, and then, since they were in Philadelphia, the Phillies would get the last at bat...

Indeed, Lidge handled the first two Yankee hitters in the 9th without much trouble...but then Johnny Damon stepped to the plate--

--and worked the count to 3-2...

...and battled...

...and battled...

--till he got a base hit!

Then, things got interesting...He stole second base, and, on the very same play, noticing that no one was covering 3rd base, he stole that too!

And things unraveled for Lidge and the Phillies from that point on...Lidge plunked Teixeira and A-Rod doubled, scoring Damon to put the Yankees up 5-4...Jorge Posada followed with a 2-run base hit and the Yanks had a 7-4 lead they would not relinquish...

Mo pitched the 9th for the save and the Yanks took a 3 games to 1 lead in the World Series!

Tonight, they can clinch!

Additional Notes:

CC Sabathia pitched 6 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs on 7 hits, once again giving his team a chance to win...

Damaso Marte got the only batter he faced, and Joba Chamberlain threw well, despite the home run he gave up...

Mariano Rivera gave his usual stellar performance...

Johnny Damon had 3 hits...Derek Jeter had 2 hits...Jorge Posada had 3 rbi...

Tonight, A.J. Burnett will be on the hill for the Yanks as they try for their 27th World Championship...

Yanks Take A 2-1 Lead In World Series

By the end of the 2nd inning, of last night's World Series game in Philadelphia, it was looking like Andy Pettitte would be hitting the showers real soon. Pettitte had already allowed 3 runs. Meanwhile, Philly starter Cole Hamel's was coasting. The Bombers were losing 3-0...

But Andy Pettitte pressed on and turned his game around. Hamel's' game on the other hand began to unravel, and it all started with Alex Rodriguez...

In the 4th inning, Rodriguez hit a ball to right field that at first glance seemed to hit off the top of the wall and was called a double--but the umpires went into conference mode, reviewed the replay that showed the ball hitting a TV camera, and overturned the call on the field.

The result? A 2-run home run that cut Philly's lead 3-2...

In the 5th, the Yanks continued to hammer Hamels, and it was he, and not Pettitte who was sent to the showers first...

The Yanks went on to win the 3nd game of the World Series by a score of 8-5...

They now lead the Phillies 2 games to 1...

Additional Notes:

Pettitte pitched 6 innings allowing 4 earned runs on 5 hits--not his sharpest postseason effort, but good enough to secure himself and the Yanks a victory...

Damaso Marte and Joba Chamberlain were perfect in relief... After recording an out in the 9th, Phil Hughes gave up a home run. He was promptly relieved by Mariano Rivera who retired the next two batters and locked up win #2 of this World Series...

Nick Swisher had 2 hits including a home run...Hideki Matsui had a pinch hit home run...Johnny Damon had a 2-run double...Andy Pettitte helped his own cause with an rbi single...

Tomorrow, CC Sabathia will be on the hill...

The Bronx Bombers Even The Series

The 2nd game of the World Series wasn't a must-win for the Bombers, but it sure felt like it...imagine them going to Philadelphia down 2-0?

Not a pleasant thought. Luckily, A.J. Burnett felt the same way and showed it with a gutsy performance nothing short of stellar. And it's a good thing too, because Pedro Martinez didn't pitch badly himself...

But Burnett was better, giving the Bombers a chance to win by pitching 7 strong innings while allowing only 1 run on 4 hits...

A home run by Mark Teixeira to tie the game and a Hideki Matsui home run to take the lead 2-1 and the Yanks were on their way to an eventual 3-1 victory and evening up the World Series at 1 game apiece!

Additional Notes:

Mariano Rivera showed once again why he's the greatest reliever of all time, turning in another impressive postseason performance. Mo pitched the 8th and 9th to notch a 6 out save...

Hideki Matsui had 2 hits including his tie-breaking home run...Jorge Posada had a pinch hit single and rbi...

Tomorrow the Yanks are off...The World Series resumes on Saturday with Game 3 in Philadelphia...Andy Pettitte will be on the hill...

The Fall Classic Starts Off On Wrong Note For Yanks

The first game of the World Series wasn't what the Yankees or their fans would have hoped for. In fact, thanks to the Phillie's Cliff Lee, the Yankees offense hardly showed up last night...

Lee pitched a complete game against the Bombers, allowing only 1 run on 10 strikeouts without so much as a single walk...

CC Sabathia meanwhile pitched 7 innings allowing only 2 runs--both on Chase Utley home runs--which would have been good enough on another night, but not this one against Lee...

Tonight, the Yanks will look to even the series against Pedro "who's your daddy?" Martinez...

Additional Notes:

The Yankees offense was lackluster except for Derek Jeter who managed 3 hits against Lee...

The Yankees' bullpen struggled yet again in the postseason. Phil Hughes, Dave Robertson, Brian Bruney and Phil Coke were not particularly effective in their relief stints--especially Hughes and Bruney...Only Damaso Marte was really sharp...

Tonight, A.J. Burnett will be on the hill for the Yankees...

The New York Yankees Clinch The ALCS!!!!!

It's official--The Yankees have won the American League Pennant! Their 5-2 victory over the Anaheim Angels last night in the Bronx, marks the 40th time in their illustrious history that they've reached this important milestone...

Some of the Game 6 highlights (For Yankee Fans, anyway) include:

  • A terrific performance by Andy Pettitte, who pitched 6 1/3 innings allowing only 1 run on 7 hits and just 1 walk...
  • A key 2-run single by Johnny Damon in the 4th inning to erase a 1-0 Anaheim advantage and put the Yankees out front 2-1...it was a lead they would not relinquish...
  • Mariano Rivera recording the last out by strikeout, and picking up the save...
  • Mental and Defensive blunders courtesy of Anaheim, specifically Vladimir Guerrero's base running gaffe in the 2nd when he got doubled off of first on a shallow fly ball to right field, and two errors in the 8th, one, by 2nd baseman Howie Kendrick, who dropped a ball while covering first, and the other, by pitcher Scott Kazmir on a throw to first...

A historic win for the Bombers who are now on their way to the World Series against Philadelphia. Game 1 will be in the Bronx on Wednesday night!

Additional Notes:

Joba Chamberlain pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief without allowing a hit...

Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez each had 2 hits...

CC Sabathia was awarded the ALCS MVP...He was every bit the ace of the staff, posting a 2-0 record in the series! There's no question that CC was deserving, but I think a Co-MVP was in order here--A-Rod and CC were both deserving in my opinion...

CC Sabathia will be on the hill Wednesday night in the Bronx for Game 1 of the World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies...

The ALCS Continues...

The Yankees could have clinched the ALCS last night in Anaheim...Down 4-0 in the 7th, they rallied to score 6 runs and take a 6-4 lead...they were oh so close...just 9 outs to the World Series...

Enter the bottom of the 7th, Girardi's decision to let A.J. Burnett remain in the game, Burnett's inability to retire the first 2 batters he faced, followed by Phil Hughes's failure to do his job. The result?

A 7-6 Angels victory and we've got a Game 6 Saturday night in the Bronx...

But at least it's in the Bronx and we've got a battle-tested Andy Pettitte on the hill...I like our chances!

Additional Notes:

Burnett had a rough first inning in which he allowed 4 runs, but then settled down till he ran into trouble in the 7th...all told he gave up 6 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks in 6 full innings of work...

Phil Hughes was ineffective giving up an earned run on 2 hits in just 1/3 inning of work...

Joba Chamberlain struggled as well, giving up 2 hits in 1/3 of an inning...only Damaso Marte and Mariano Rivera were effective in their respective relief stints...

Mark Teixeira and Melky Cabrera each had 2 hits...Teixeira had 3 rbi...Robinson Cano had 2 rbi...

Tomorrow, at Yankee Stadium, Andy Pettitte will be on the hill...

Yankees Win, Lead ALCS 3-1!

Tuesday night in Anaheim, CC Sabathia was an indefatigable ace and Alex Rodriguez a one man show, producing runs both with his prowess at the plate and on the basepaths, as the Yankees routed the Angels 10-1 to take a commanding 3 games to 1 lead in the ALCS...

Just one more win and the Yankees are headed to the World Series!

Additional Notes:

Sabathia pitched 8 innings, allowing only 1 run on 5 hits...

Chad Gaudin pitched a scoreless 9th...

Melky Cabrera had a big night for a change--3 hits and 4 rbi...Alex Rodriguez had 3 hits including a 2-run home run...Derek Jeter had 2 hits...Damon had a 2-run home run...

Today the Yankees are off...Tomorrow they play Game 5 of the ALCS in Anaheim...A.J. Burnett will be on the hill...

Inauspicious Start In Anaheim

Monday afternoon's game 3 of the ALCS between the Yankees and the Angels was a nail biter that unfortunately didn't go the Pinstripes way...

Playing in Anaheim is rarely easy for the Pinstripes and the 3rd game of the ALCS proved no exception... The game ended in the 11th inning when, with 2 outs, Howie Kendrick hit a single followed by a Jeff Mathis double that gave the Halos a 4-3 win over the Yanks...

Additional Notes:

Andy Pettitte pitched well--except for the 2-run hr he gave up in the 6th...in total, he threw 6 1/3 innings, surrendering 3 earned runs on 7 hits...

Phil Coke, Damaso Marte, Dave Roberston and Mariano Rivera were effective in relief...Mariano Rivera was particularly masterful...he came into a difficult situation in the 10th and Houdi'd his way out of it...

Joba Chamberlain and Alfredo Aceves, however, did not fair well in their relief stints...

A strange move in the 11th, when Joe Girardi took replaced Dave Robertson who had retired the first two batters, with Alfredo Aceves, who face two batters and didn't record an out, leading to the Angels win...

Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Jorge Posada and Johnny Damon all homered, but ultimately it wasn't enough...Posada and Robinson Cano had 2 hits each...

Tonight, CC Sabathia will be on the hill...

Let's Go Yanks!
