Ambushed In The 8th, Yanks Fall To Indians 5-3

The suddenness of it-I think that was what was most shocking about the turn of events in the 8th inning at Yankee stadium Tuesday night:

Joba Chamberlain on the mound...he walks two, but hey, you know he'll get out of it...it's freakin' Joba for Chrissakes...

-And then...the unthinkable...A fastball to pinch hitter Dave Dellucci...wait...he didn't just hit that did he? Not off of Joba...

Abreu looks up...The ball lands in the right field stands...The Indians take a 5-3 lead and the Yankees can not recover...

That sort of thing just isn't supposed to happen to Joba Chamberlain...not to the Joba whose name is uttered in the same breath as the infallible Mariano Rivera... That Joba does not fail...can not fail...

Except on this night he's not Mo...

He's not even Joba...

He's just human...

Additional notes:

Andy Pettitte pitched well allowing only 2 earned runs in 6 1/3...

Farnsworth pitched a scoreless 2/3 of an inning in relief of Pettitte....

Matsui continues to excel at the plate...he extended his hitting streak to 15 games and is sporting a .342 average...

Tomorrow night look for Wang to reprise his role of stopper...

GO YANKS!

Yes, Joba proves he is human, but a 2 run deficit is one that can be overcome. The great Yankees of yesteryear used to be able to do those sort of things. Perhaps it's just my perception, but this team seems to have a "lay down and die" mentality when faced with adversity. I'm quite surprised as I thought just the opposite would be the case with Joe Girardi at the helm. But I guess it's really more about what's inside each player that ultimately makes a champion. Those great Yankee teams of 96 - 2000 probably could have won with Neil Diamond as their manager. Because I think those teams had more players with an intense burning desire to win at all costs. Not sure if the same can be said of this bunch.
